During the Bremen City Council’s regular work session on Jan. 14, the council heard updates from their department heads, including information on solidified plans for a recycling program for the city.

According to City Manager Perry Hicks, he has been in negotiations with Waste Industries of Douglasville to provide city residents with a recycling option by March 1.

“We’re getting all the details ironed out so we can renew our three-year contract with them and start a recycling program here in the city,” Hicks said.

The city’s attorney will be working on the contract this month so the city can approve it during their regular February meeting.

“I’m really excited about this,” Hicks said. “It’s an opportunity to reduce our waste stream. It’s good for our community, and it’s good for the environement.”

The city was also updated on maintenance work being done in the city cemetery, as well as minor repairs to city streets.

“We’ve been doing temporary road patches lately to hold us over until we can do more permanent repairs when the weather improves,” Hicks said.

During the regular meeting, the council approved the appointment of Elmira Barrow to fill the unexpired term of Ann Sewell on the Housing Authority Board.

During public participation, Haralson County Commissioner Kenneth Smith spoke briefly on the issue the county is facing regarding noise at the shooting range on Budapest Cemetery Road in Waco.

The next city council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 18.
