Juliette, GA, November 13, 2009- A Civil War living history program will be held at Griswoldville Battlefield Monument on Saturday, November 21, 2009 to commemorate the battle and the soldiers who fought there. The living history program begins at 10 a.m. and ends with a memorial service at 12:00 noon. Included are portrayals of solder life and a historian to explain the details of the battle. Visitors may also walk around the battlefield. Admission is free.
The Battle of Griswoldville took place November 22, 1864 when the Georgia militia encountered seasoned Union troops on the outskirts of the destroyed town of Griswoldville. This battle is remembered as the only major infantry opposition to Sherman’s March to the Sea.
Griswoldville Battlefield is located 10 miles east of Macon on the Jones/Twiggs County line. There are several routes to the battlefield from Macon. From US 129, Macon, take Hwy 49 (Shurling Drive) north. Turn right onto Henderson Rd., left onto Old Griswoldville Rd., then left onto Baker Rd. The parking area is 1/3 mi. on the left. Another route is to take Hwy 57 east from Macon, left onto Battlefield Drive, left onto Old Griswoldville Rd., and right onto Baker Rd.
Griswoldville Battlefield Monument is protected by the state of Georgia with administration by Jarrell Plantation Historic Site and Indian Springs State Park, both in the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
